About this course

Road network planning and profitability calculations, development of annual mill supply plans, business relationships with logging and transport contractors, planning and management of timber production and transport, coordination of wood supply from forest to industry.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student shall be able to 1) describe and apply relevant principles and methods for road network planning in varying terrain conditions with corresponding profitability calculations, 2) describe key principles for developing business relationships with harvesting- and transport contractors 3) use effective methods for planning and management of production and transport of timber and 4) organize coordination of wood flows from forest to industry.

Skills

Students shall be able to do production- and transport planning in a common spreadsheet such as EXCEL.

General competence

The student shall be able to analyze wood supply chain management performance and identify improvement potentials.

  • Exercises, litterature assignments, lectures and excursions.
  • Discussion/follow-up of exercises with instructurs and concluding gjest lectures from sector representatives (per module). Course administration is supported by Canvas and e-mail.
  • SKOG240 or equivalent.

  • Total assessment consisting of

    • Written exam (3,5 hours) counts 50 %.
    • Portfolio with assignments counts 50 %.

    Both must be passed for passing the exam.

  • External examiner assesses all exam papers.

    The portfolio consisting of exercises is assessed by an internal examiner.

    Exercises, literature seminars and excursions approved by instructors.

  • Excursions must be passed, oral presentations and discussions around literature seminars and exercises.
  • 24 lecture hours, 48 hours labwork/litteratur seminarer, 2 excursion days

  • Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)

    7,5 p forest engineering at bachelors level (NMBU (SKOG240), INN-Evenstad (6EV107, or SKO2022 and SKO2203) or equivalent).
