Course contents:
Main topics: Insect anatomy, physiology, sensory systems, reproduction, life history strategies, evolution, behaviour, medical entomology, pest management. The teaching consists of lectures, laboratory studies, discussion groups and videos. The final part of the course includes presentations of entomological research at Campus Ås.
Learning outcome:

A student who has completed and passed the course shall have acquired the following:

Knowledge: The student will have knowledge on insect anatomy, physiology, sensory systems, reproduction, development, ecology, behaviour, pest management and ongoing entomological reseach at Campus Ås.

Skills: The student can apply their knowledge to entomological problems within teaching, research or resource management.  

General competence: The student has insight into and is able to communicate the structure, function and significance of insects. The student has general entomologcal competence sufficient to start a MSc degree in entomology, including studies of literature written in English. 

Learning activities:
Lectures, lab. exercises, discussions, self-study.
Teaching support:
The candidate´s learning can be supported through academic supervision face to face or via e-mail.
Gullan and  Cranston (2010): The insects. An outline of entomology. 4th edition.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Laboratory exercises and discussion seminars.
Mid-term exam (many short questions), 45 minutes, counts 1/3 of the grade. Final written exam, 3 hours, counts 2/3 of the grade. It is not required that the student passes both exams to pass the entire course. A passing grade is based on the overall quality of the entire evaluated material.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 34 hours. Discussion group or laboratory work: 12 hours. Exams: 3.75 hours. Independent work (preparation for discussion group, laboratory work, exams etc.): 250 hours.

The external examiner approves the questions given in the final exam and evaluates all answers from all students. The mid-term exam is evaluated by the main teacher alone.
