The professional studies thread consists of three parts (modules). The thread is continuous in the study and runs from the first to the last semester in the study, with three main parts:
Veterinary Public Health and Veterinary Regulations(Responsible Marit Nesje and Eystein Skjerve) where the students will learn about the legal framework for the veterinary professional, professional ethical assessments and the veterinary responsibility in important areas of society such as bioproduction, animal welfare, the environment and sustainability. The theoretical course starts in the first semester, includes meat control in the 9th semester and a summary teaching in the 11/12 semester (3 weeks). Epidemiology, statistics and research methodology(Responsible Ingrid Toftaker) where students will be able to read, understand, extract and critically evaluate information from scientific articles. This module leads towards a small written thesis starting in the 6th semester and delivery in the 8th semester. Communication(Responsible: Kristin Prestrud) starts with a focus on communication and interaction in learning student groups. As the clinic approaches, teaching switches to communication with colleagues and clients in a clinic situation, while the topic ends with communication to the community, here interconnected with risk communication. This section also includes mental health and clinic administration.
After completing the course, the student should:
- Know the basic features of the regulations that define veterinary activities, including the Food Act and key regulations in the so-called hygiene package as well as the Act on Animal Health Personnel and Animal Welfare Law.
- Know the national regulations that set the framework for controlling infectious diseases in animals and zoonotic infections, including the import regulations.
- Know the emergency procedures, reporting requirements and principles for dealing with serious / exotic infections in livestock and farmed fish.
- Know about the Food Safety Authority and its organization, as well as the cooperation with the Scientific Committee for Foods and the Environment and the use of risk assessments
- Have a basic understanding of the veterinarian's professional role and our responsibilities in relation to society as well as the relationships to other disciplines and professions
- Be able to reflect on this in topics such as food safety, environmental protection, infection control, terrestrial and marine bioproduction and sports and family animal medicine.
- Know central parts of veterinary professional history
- Know professional ethical principles and ethical guidelines for the veterinary profession
- Be able to put the veterinary profession into a One Health context
- Understand the importance of the subject in development towards sustainable bio-production, with a main focus on the Norwegian animal-based food chains.
- Know key elements of animal welfare at slaughterhouses and the role of meat control in disease monitoring and control
- Have theoretical knowledge about the inspection / audit of food companies and the quality system of slaughterhouses and other food companies.
- Know the structure and function of important surveillance programs under the auspices of the Food Safety Authority and the livestock industry.
- Be able to evaluate the strength of evidence from various sources, explain different types of study design and understand the importance of study design for how we evaluate and interpret the results of scientific studies.
- Have knowledge of the structure, and key elements for critical evaluation, of scientific articles.
- Know the main principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine
- Understand the principles of causality.
- Understand the principles of population and selection, different ways of making samples, and the implications for interpreting study results.
- Understand and explain key concepts and common goals used in veterinary epidemiology, including types of variables, association goals, and disease frequency goals.
- Know the main groups of bias (systematic errors), and evaluate possible bias in scientific publications.
- Know the main principles of descriptive statistics, estimation and simple statistical analysis, including hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. Know the main principles for interpretation and evaluation of diagnostic tests.
After completing the course, the student should:
Veterinary Community Medicine and the veterinary regulations
- Be able to consider the use of relevant regulations in cases that are under the veterinarian's professional responsibility.
- Be able to review and assess established control and monitoring programs
- Be able to perform ante and post-mortem control, including emergency slaughter,
- Be able to make relevant professional assessments regarding the meat control assessment of slaughter
- Be able to easily assess slaughter hygiene and animal welfare in the slaughterhouse
- Be able to formulate a research question and create a single causal diagram.
- Be able to present descriptive statistics for simple data sets and interpret results from some types of statistical analysis.
- Be able to present and explain association goals and measures of disease frequency from relevant data material.
- Be able to conduct and describe a systematic literature search in relevant databases in veterinary medicine.
- Be able to critically evaluate and extract relevant information from various sources, with emphasis on scientific literature.
- Be able to use scientific literature as a basis for decisions in veterinary issues, both in clinical and research questions.
- Be able to evaluate results from diagnostic tests using knowledge of the test's properties and other factors that are important to the probability of a positive test result.
- Be able to write a literature-based in-depth essay and present a summary of it orally.
- Be able to work well in regular colloquium groups and other group-based teaching
- Be able to communicate with animal owners in a respectful and good manner
- Be able to establish good relationships with veterinary colleagues and others in a clinical everyday life
- Have good written communication skills with others, including risk communication to the community.
- Reflect on one's own knowledge level and skill level in relation to learning outcomes.
- Self-evaluate and identify own academic strengths and weaknesses in the field.
Professional studies is a complex thread with many different student activities. Teaching material is presented through traditional lectures, video lectures and the use of "inverted classroom". Processing and reflection will take place by means of exercises and discussions, both individually and in groups. Some of the experience is field-based through field trips. In the 9th semester there is a practical training in meat inspection in Sandnes. Professional studies also include the students' specialization essay, which is conducted as a literature study with submission in the 8th semester.
The thread is taught throughout the study, and Canvas will be used to communicate directly how the students can get in touch with the subject teacher. Some of the academic guidance is given when assessing assignments, and in some contexts assessments from other students are used - so-called peer assessment.
Curriculum for each year of study will be communicated on Canvas.
Following the thread requires the student to have passed study requirements for the previous year in the study.
The thread is an integrated part of the VET study, and no specific prior knowledge is needed.
Parts of the course require mandatory attendance. Lectures are not normally compulsory unless specifically stated in the Canvas room.

No direct overlap, but the subject requires close collaboration with the parts of the study being taught at the same time.

Professional studies is a heterogeneous thread throughout the study in veterinary medicine. The teaching consists of lectures, group discussions and exercises, practical teaching and field contact

Some parts of the teaching will be practical or field oriented. This is especially for training in meat inspection (5th year). Information about equipment will be made available on Canvas for each year.
Veterinary Public Health
