Students taking a Masters degree in Environment and Natural Resources with specialisation in Limnology and Water Resources.
Course contents:
Lectures: An introduction to processes in various types of lakes. Will also deal with the principles of collecting water and sediment samples and how to conduct water and sediment analysis. Field methodology: Representative sampling of water, sediments and biological material. Measurements in the field (in situ). Laboratory work: Analyses of the collected material. Report writing: Critical evaluation of data collected in the field. Reporting of analytical results that are put into a limnological context.
Learning outcome:
Students are to learn field work, how to collect water samples and important physical and chemical methods for quantifying the importance of central limnological processes in rivers and lakes. Knowledge of the relationships between physical, chemical and biological data and processes in lakes. Representative sampling, analysis and measurements related to limnological investigations. They are to be able to do field work and physical/chemical analyses related to fresh-water investigations and understand that freshwater is a vulnerable resource that must be managed properly in order to maintain good water quality and the biological diversity.
Learning activities:
Lectures are used as introductions to topics that are treated in the field and in the laboratory. Field work is used for students to gain experience with various methods for collecting samples and in situ measurements that are used in limnological investigations and to understand the uncertainty related to water sampling. The field work will take place in various types of lakes with various activities in the drainage basin. Lab work is used in order for students to learn to analyse water and sediment samples. The writing of reports is used so that students learn to document the analytical results as well as fit the results into a limnological context.

The course is supported by skilled persons within limnology and hydrology, and laboratory technicians during the whole period.

Mandatory activity:
Both participation in field and laboratory activities and writing of reports must be passed for the students to pass the course. The students are assessed during the course through field and laboratory work. Furthermore, the students are assessed on a group report where they summarise their results.The evaluation of the course is based on the report (50 %) and the work in the field and laboratory (50 %). Grading system: Pass / Fail.
