Course contents:
Wood formation. Macroscopic, microscopic, sub-microscopic and chemical structure of wood. Physical and mechanical properties of wood and wood products. Defects and abnormalities in wood. Silviculture and wood quality. Degradation and durability of wood, and wood protection.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge: The student should know the structure and properties of wood. The students should know the variation in the physical and mechanical properties of wood.

Skills: The students should be able to describe the structure of wood and recognise the Norwegian species by wood anatomy. The students should also be able to perform  testing of mechanical and physical properties.

General competence: The students should have a basis to evaluate use of wood in different situations.

Learning activities:
Lectures. Exercises: Microscopic studies of wood. Testing of wood properties.

The course has web pages in Canvas, where also the assignments are announced. The lecturers are available for questions during office hours.

Mandatory activity:
Exercises with approved report.
Assessment:
Continuous exam: Wood anatomy test counting for 30% and written exam (3 hours) counting for 70%.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: approx. 25 hours. Exercises: approx. 20 hours. Data processing, reporting and self-study: approx. 100 hours.

Note:
The course is required for the students taking TRE300.
Examiner:
An external examiner evaluates the exam. The course responsible approves the exercise reports and evaluates the wood anatomy test.
