About this course

Wood formation. Macroscopic, microscopic, sub-microscopic and chemical structure of wood. Physical and mechanical properties of wood and wood products. Defects and abnormalities in wood. Silviculture and wood quality. Degradation and durability of wood, and wood protection.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student should have wide knowledge about the structure and properties of wood, and they should be able to relate it to how wood is influenced by the silviculture, and how suitable wood is for different applications.

Skills: The students should be able to describe the structure of wood and to determine the Norwegian species by wood anatomy. The students should also be able to perform testing of physical and mechanical properties of wood.

General competence: The students should be able to communicate technical information and exchange opinions with others on the subject.

  • Lectures. Exercises: Microscopic studies of wood. Testing of wood properties.
  • The course has web pages in Canvas, where also the assignments are announced. The lecturers are available for questions during office hours.
  • Combined assessment:

    • Wood anatomy test counting for 40%
    • Written exam (3 hours) counting for 60%.

    Both parts of the evaluation must be passed to pass the course.

  • External examiner approves the examination paper and the examiners guideline, and grades a selected number of answers. The course responsible approves the exercise reports and grades the wood anatomy test.
  • Exercises with approved report.
  • The course is required for the students taking TRE300.
