Status, challanges, legislative aspects in Norway, EU and internationally- Advanced theoretical aspects in water supply and conventional wastewater treatment - Combined processes in water supply and wastewater treatment - Impact of Climate Change-Design aspects in water supply and wastewater treatment - Design aspects in small scale wastewater treatment - Design aspects in sludge management and solid waste management - Basics in process control - Models and simulation programs in water and wastewater treatment - Emerging and innovative technologies
Knowledge: students should have a deeper theoretical understanding of the main treatment processes, best practices and how to optimize the operation of a treatment plant. They should possess the basic understanding of the state-of-the-art techniques on process control and optimization Professional skills: students shall be able to understand the capabilities and limitations of various treatment methods and their compatibilities when integrating the systems. They should be able to select suitable treatment process combinations and to evaluate their performances General competence: students should be able to identify operational errors/weaknesses of a treatment plant and their basic troubleshooting. They should also have competence about the capabilities of simulation programs and control systems in general. They should also have competence on Norwegian and European legal requirements on water supply and wastewater treatment.
(1) Lectures (2) Term papers presented in plenary session for all students, (3) Tutorials with process simulation programs, (4) excursion to treatment plant(s) to learn how the unit processes are integrated and their operational challenges. Most of the presentations will be available in Canvas before the lectures.

Written examination counts for 75%, term papers count for 25%: Written exams may include both MCQ and individul questions.
For a course of 15 credits, ca. 450 hours of work is anticipated. Thus 15-20 hours/week of self-studies should be expected.
