Course responsible: Navreet Kaur, Solve Sæbø
ECTS credits: 10
Faculty: Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science
Teaching language: NO
(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Limits of class size:
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in the parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation both in Autumn parallel and Spring parallel.
Course frequency: Each spring and autumn
First time: Study year 2003-2004
Course contents:
Descriptive statistics. Basic probability, conditional probability, discrete and continuous variables, expectation and variance. Covariance, correlation, and independence. Estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Z-tests and T-tests. Simple linear regression. One-way analysis of variance. Chi square tests. Application of simple statistical software (R Commander).
Learning outcome:
The students will learn the basic concepts in statistics. They will get familiar with the assumptions and the applications of the most commonly used statistical methods applied in science and everyday life. The students will be able to apply such methods on simple problems in their own studies. Through the exercises (both compulsory and optional) on real data, the students must prove that they have acquired the basic knowledge.
Learning activities:
Lectures or lecture videos covering central concepts of statistics, illustrated by many applied examples. The students will be organised in groups in which they are working with different practical exercises. Compulsory exercises that must be solved and approved before the exam.
Teaching support:
The course responsible is always available (by direct contact, by phone, or by e-mail). Web pages will always be updated. Assistant teachers are available during group sessions (or anytime).
Will be announced on the course website before the semester.
MATH100 or MATH111 (may be taken in the same semester).
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:

There will be weekly online assignments of which 80 % must be approved throughout the course. In order to get each assignment approved 50 % of the exercises must be correctly answered.

Further, the students will be distributed into weekly colloquium groups with compulsory attendance requirements. Exemption from colloquium group attendance may be granted in particular cases upon application to the course responsible after course start.

Students who has earlier approved compulsory activity in the course, need not attend the compulsory activities listed above, but may attend voluntarily.

A final 3.5 hours written exam, A-F, potentially containing multiple choice tests. The final exam counts 100 %.
Nominal workload:

Lectures/colloquium groups: 52 hours.

Exercise groups: 52 hours.

Individual study: 196 hours.

Entrance requirements:
MATRS - General admission requirements or prior experiential learning, and R1 or (S1+S2) or similar mathematical skills
Type of course:

The course will entirely or partly follow a so-called "flipped classroom" style for 4 hours a week. Flipped classroom means that the students watch lecture-videos (2-4 hours homework per week) as preparation for colloquium groups. During the colloquium group work the course responsible and teacher-assistants will circulate the groups and discuss problems and exercises. As a replacement for colloquium groups, regular lectures may be given at the start, during and/or at the end of the course. Information about this will be given in the beginning of the course.

Attendance at exercise groups is voluntary, but the work load is normed to 4 hours a week.

The course is offered twice a year, both in the spring and autumn parallel.
An external examiner evaluates all exam question and selected examination papers as calibration of the evaluation if other excersises than multiple choice are given at the final exam.
Allowed examination aids: C3 Alle typer kalkulatorer, alle andre hjelpemidler - inkludert digitale
