About this course

The course is divided into seven different themes approached through lectures, exercises, and seminars. The course starts with an introduction to "Planning theory" and some "Topics in resource economics". Subsequently, three themes, that to a large extent build on lectures from previous courses and that also partly are closely linked, are brought up. These themes are "Development and application of models and tools for planning and decision-support", "Forestry planning, decision-oriented resource inventories and the value of information" and "Strategic planning for forest properties". Finally, an introduction to the themes "Forest sector models for national and international market and policy analyses" and "Global forest resources and management" are given.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • The students should have knowledge of planning theory, topics in resource economics, forest sector models, and of global forest resources and management.
  • The students should have comprehensive knowledge of development and application of models and tools for planning and decision-support, forestry planning, decision-oriented resource inventories and the value of information, and strategic planning for forest properties.

Skills:

  • The student should be able to analyse, synthesize and critically relate to important questions when planning the management of forest areas.
  • The students should be able to communicate interdisciplinary topics and research results both in writing and orally.

General competence:

  • The student should achieve a conscious and balanced attitude on the management of forests at different geographical levels

  • Combined assessment:

    • Written exam (3 hours) counts 50%.
    • Exercise 1 counts 10%
    • Exercise 2 counts 20%
    • Exercise 3 counts 20%

    All parts must be passed to pass totally in the course.

  • External examiner evaluates all final exam papers. External examiner approves activities related to Exercise 1, Exercise 2 and Exercise 3. Course responsible and relevant teacher evaluate Exercise 1, Exercise 2 and Exercise 3. Course responsible approves seminar activities.
  • Exercises and seminars. Seminar participation, presentation and seminar reports must be approved to pass the course.
