Preferential right:
First year students, M-REIS are given priority. Student from other study programs must contact course responsible to find out if they can take the course. 
Course contents:
The course shall give the new master students in nature-based tourism an introduction to NMBU, the master program, study plans, career and working life. Further an overview of the nature-based tourism sector with an emphasis on definitions, characteristics, actors, supply and demand. Premises and surroundings (raw material, law of common entry, communities etc.) and trends (outdoor recreation, activities, planning etc.).

A qualified candidate shall have acquired the following learning goals:


The course gives knowledge about nature-based tourism and its charactersistics and actors. Students get insight about the nature-based tourism sector in Norway, the Nordic countries and internationally. The following is emphasized: Sustainability principles and the role of natural resources for tourism and other use.


The field trip and the term papers give the students skills in identifying and analyzing the characteristics of actors in the nature-based tourism sector. The group project emphasizes project planning.  By writing a feature article in newspaper format, the student shall be able to do public outreach about a specified topic.

Generell competence

Students get insight about nature-based tourism and its actors, surroundings and development. The course shall provide competence about responsible development and management in the nature-based tourism field. REIS202 shall also give a foundation for reflection about nature-based tourism relationship to nature. local communities, and economic development. Further, create motivation and insight into the different options that the Master program presents and help the students feel like a group and create belonging and commitment.

Learning activities:
5-days field trip, 2-days Innovation camp/field trip (voluntarily), lectures, guest speakers, and semester assignments.

Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
5-days of compulsory field trip in the second week of the August block. A summary /essay from the field trip delivered by groups must be graded as passed. Give feedback to others' group term paper. 
The semester assignment includes two separate parts. Both parts must be passed to pass the course:¿
  • Chronicle about nature-based tourism. Individual assignment. Counts 40%.  
  • Term paper (group work). Counts 60%. 
Nominal workload:
Ca. 300 working hours for the students, including lectures, exercises/excursion and semester assignment.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
5-day compulsory field trip. Innovation Camp/ field trip (voluntarily). Lectures.

Students at the masterprogram Nature-based Tourism will automatically be registered for the course at semester start. Others must apply to the course responsible by August 1st

NB! REIS202 is especially designed for first year masterstudents in Nature-based Tourism. REIS202 is their first course in the master program. Lectures and the field trip is therefore intended to give these students an overview of the choices and possibilities of what to expect later in the program. Thus, program structure and content, information about master thesis, supervisors, and experiences former students have made are a major part of the course.

Internal and external examiner evaluate the written work.
