About this course

Tourism is the world's fastest growing industry, and thus entails both challenges and opportunities to achieve the UN's sustainability goals. In today's world, most sectors of society are affected in one way or another by tourism. This especially applies to nature management, economies and local communities. The course provides an understanding of the tourism system internationally and in Norway. Central themes further are environmental, economic and social consequences of tourism, sustainability, destination development, driving forces, trends, marketing and the tourism product.

Learning outcome

A candidate with a completed qualification shall have the following learning outcomes in the course:

Knowledge:

The student should be able to describe and discuss the tourism system, its history, key theories, in Norway and internationally. The student should be able to describe and discuss sustainability in tourism and the environmental, economic and socio-economic consequences of tourism.

Skills:

Through theory from lectures, the syllabus and the innovation camp, the student should be able to identify opportunities, challenges and potential conflicts in the development of a planned business idea.

General competence:

Students should be able to reflect on the role of tourism in society and to achieve the UN's sustainability goals.

  • Lectures, guest lectures, innovation camp / excursions over 2 days. At the innovation camp, students are required to bring their own sleeping bag and sleeping pad (as we will be sleeping in a tented camp or similar).
  • The course responsible will be available for consultations during office hours.
  • Final written exam 3,5 hours.
  • An external examiner will checks and approve the final exam and censor guidelines. An internal examiner will grade the exam.
  • 1) Innovation Camp/field trip over 2 days. Students not able to physically attend will be given an alternative group assignment.
  • At the innovation camp, students are required to bring their own sleeping bag and sleeping pad (as we will be sleeping in a tented camp or similar). The location of the Innovation Camp changes each year, and will be announced at the beginning of the course.
  • 30 hours lectures. Innovation Camp/field trip: 15 hours.
