Course contents:
Tourism as a phenomenon and as an industry. Definitions, terms, characteristics, research and knowledge frontiers. The Tourism system -  history and growth. The tourism product. Tourism marketing. Destination development. Environmental, economic and social consequences of tourism. Sustainable tourism.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge:

During the course the students will acquire general knowledge about tourism as a phenomenon and as a business in Norway and internationally.

Skills:

The students will gain skills in identifying actors and structures in the tourism sector. Further be able to carry out simpler analyses of tourism projects, and evaluate economic, social and environmental consequences of tourism.

General competence:

The students shall have competence about tourism in general, and be able to reflect over the role of tourism in society. The course gives a necessary insight into the tourism field before taking the other tourism courses of the master program

Lectures and Innovation Camp.

The course responsible will be available for consultations during office hours.

Assessment:
Final 3 hour written exam. Grades: A-E / Not passed
Nominal workload:
Approx. 150 working hours for the student; lectures and Innovation Camp included.

Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)

Lectures and Innovation Camp: 30 hours.
Note:
The course is reduced with 5 ECTS compared to 2015 and earlier. (These 5 ECTS are transferred to REIS202).
