Due to the lab facilities, the maximum number of student are 24.The course will not be given if less than 5 students participate.

Course contents:
Content: The biology and life style of plant pathogens. How they can be isolated and cultivated. Disease cycle: Survival, dispersal, infection, disease development. Which weapons do pathogens have? Disease physiology. How plants defend themselves against pathogens. The gene for gene theory. Development of plant disease epidemics. Principles for disease control. Ecological aspects of plant diseases and their control methods. National and international plant health legislation. Structure: Theoretical overview of the different topics will be presented in lectures. Lab. practicals and assignment for self study are aiming at giving experience and in depth understanding of the different topics. A limited number of diseases will be selected for "Case studies", where several topics and aspects kan be illustrated in one singel host-pathogen system. In addition there will be weekly literature seminars,through which the students will be able improve their ability to critical reading. Through the term paper, the students have the possibility to specialise in one particular area or topic (molecular plant pathology or epidemiology).
Learning outcome:
Knowledgwe: Shall understand: - The biology of importent viruses,viroids, bacteria, phytoplasma, oomycetes and fungi that are causing plant diseases. - Methods for identification and diagnosis (both classica and molecular) - Host-pathogen interactions, at both cell level and population level. Skills: Shall be able to: - Employ the knowledge for developing strategies for plant disease management. - Evaluate how epidemics develop and advice on risk managemnet. Competence: Shall be able to: - Evaluate envioronmental and social consequences of plant diseses and the strategies to combat the diseses. - Stay updated on plant diseases threatening our culivated plants. - Critically evaluate published literature in this area

Recommended textbook: Agrios: PLANT PATHOLOGY, 5th ed. 2005 ISBN 0-12-044565-4

Bachelor level courses in plant physiology,microbiology, genetics and chemistry (BOT130, BIO130, BIO120 and KJM100), including experience in lab work in these subjects, are absolutely necessary. Basic plant pathology (plant pathology part of PLV200) will be an advantage.

Introductory course in plant pathology, cell biology,biochemistry, ecology, organic chemistry, molecular biology
