Course contents:
The course give an introduction to studies in Plant Sciences, and focus the high diversity of plants used for food and feed, ornamental plants, landscape plants and for urban greeneries, as well as natural conditions for plant production in Norway. Furthermore, introductions to the main disciplines within plant scinece are given, as crop science and agronomy, plant breeding, plant biotechnology, plant protection, soil and plant nutrition. Prinsipals for production in fields and in regulated climate (as greenhouse), including urban agriculture and in urban agriculture are included. The role of plants in a sustainable food system are being discussed.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge on the most important crops grown in Norway and their uses, included plants used in urban greeneries, landscape plants and in urban agriculture.
  • Knowledge on natural conditions for plant growth in Norway, and how climate changes can give both possibilities and challenges.
  • Knowledge on the principals for plant production in field and greenhouse.
  • Knowledge to the different disciplines within plant science

Skills

  • Can identify the most important crops used for food, feed, urban greeneries, and in urban agriculture
  • Can search for relevant literature, and present a topic within plant science for other students on Bachelor-level
  • Can participate in discussions, and use the most important scientific terms
  • Know the facilities given from NMBU Universitetsbibliotek, and can use ICT-systems to search for literature
  • Know the regulations at NMBU for plagiarism

Competence

  • Overview on plant production in Norway, and how this has developed
  • Overview of the most important principals for plant production, and the role of plants in a sustainable agriculture and diet
  • Understand the multi-disciplinary nature of the Plant Science study programme, and the need for knowledge in disciplines as chemistry, botany, plant physiology, genetics and soil science.
  • Insight to design own study plan
Learning activities:
Lectures in field, exercises, demonstrations, excursions,  and some overview lectures. Writing of reports from student experiments. Group work with presentation.
Teaching support:
Web-support and academic guidance from teachers.
Syllabus:
List of the required readings will be given at the start of the course.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Excursions.  Report from exercises. Group work with presentation. Multiple Choice.
Assessment:
Reports from exercises, presentation of the group work, and one multiple choice. All parts have to be passed. Examination pass/failed.
Nominal workload:
125 working hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
75 hours Lectures in field and greenhouse, exercise/excursion/demonstrations). Self studies 50 hours.

External sensor shall evaluate the course.
