Course contents:
Introduction to studies in Plant Sciences. Sustainable Food Production where plants have important impacts. Introduction to the high diversity of plants used for food and feed, ornamental plants, landscape plants and for urban greeneries. Important groups of cultivated plants, their uses and adaptations to environments, and conditions for plant Production in Norway. Prinsipals for production in fields and in regulated climate (as greenhouse), including urban agriculture. Introductions to main diciplines in plant science, as soil science, plant protection, plant breeding and plant biology.
Learning outcome:
The students shall learn basic principles for sustainable food production and gain knowledge about food production in Norway. The students shall acquire an overview of plant production in field and greenhouses, including urban agriculture. They are to be familiar with the most important cultivated plants and plants used in urban greeneries and for landscaping, and the main terms used within plant production. The students shall gain knowledge about the main disciplines in plant science as well as the possible spesializations in the study programme. 
Learning activities:
Lectures in field, exercises, demonstrations, excursions,  and some overview lectures. Writing of reports from student experiments. Group work with presentation.
Teaching support:
Web-support and academic guidance from teachers.
List of the required readings will be given at the start of the course.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Excursions.  Report from exercises. Group work with presentation. Multiple Choice.
Reports from exercises, presentation of the group work, and one multiple choice. All parts have to be passed. Examination pass/failed.
Nominal workload:
150 working hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
90t (Lectures in field and greenhouse, exercise/excursion/demonstrations). Self studies 60 hours.
External sensor shall evaluate the course.
