Course contents:
The main emphasis is on hands-on application of GIS software through exercises. The exercises are supported by lectures that cover the most central aspects of the theoretical foundations of geographical information systems and geographical data. Important elements: Representation of geographical information in a computer. Standards. Geographical references systems. Data sources, data capture and data quality. Operations on geographical data. Presentation of geographical information. Basic analysis of geographical data.
Learning outcome:
The students shall be able to apply Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for simple manipulation, analysis and presentation of geographical information. The students shall have insights into the most central parts of the theoretical foundations of geographical information systems, enabling them to apply GIS in their further studies.
Learning activities:
Lectures, exercises (in groups of 2 students) and self study. Much emphasis is put on hands-on application of GIS software through exercises. The exercises are organised according to a pre-determined schedule with supervisors present.

Mandatory activity:
Exercises are mandatory and must be passed/approved
Assessment:
2 hours written exam, no examination aids. Pass/fail (pass level: 50%).

Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Reduction of credits:

GMGL101:  5 credit reduction

LAD102 (until 2009): 5 credit reduction

NATF150: 4 credit reduction

Type of course:
26 hours of lectures / presentations / exercise preparations. 52 hours of exercises in computer laboratories.
Note:
The course will be organised in a cooperation between three departments (INA, IMT, ILP).
Examiner:
External sensor approves exam submissions and evaluate a range of submissions.
Allowed examination aids: A1 No calculator, no other aids
