Course contents:
The topic for LAA 350 in H-2018 is center development and full-year use in the three center areas Kvadraturen, Tangvall and Nodeland in the new Kristiansand municipality. Kristiansand, Søgne and Sogndalen municipalities will from 2020 be one and the same municipality. One ambition of the new municipality will be to maintain and strengthen a polyscentric structure, where the two former municipality centres Tangvall and Nodeland shall be further developed. The course will focus on how spesific sites and development opportunities can support this ambition, as well as the old city centre of Kristiansand, Kvadraturen, can enhanche its attractiveness and strenghten its role as the regional capital. The material produced in LAA 350 will be part of a larger project "Kristiansand dobbel +", together with a range of interdisciplinary master's theses class in 2019, will contribute to the content of a major participatory- and exhibition project in Kristiansand fall 2019.
LAA 350, H-2018 will also attend a one week international workshop in Kristiansand in week 39. The work Shop is conducted in cooperation between the mentioned municipalities and ISOCARP. https://isocarp.org/ The result will be a poster presentation in a joint event on the last day of the work shop. Everyone who participates in LAA 350 is expected to be present in Kristiansand. In week 40, ISOCARP will hold its world congress in Bodø. It is proposed that a group of 10-12 students can attend this and present their poster at the congress. More information about this will be posted on Canvas.
The emphasis in the course is project work (group) that goes through the entire semester. Each group will explore opportunities for higher exploitation in a given bounded property. The groups will program their task within a common framework. It should be done feasibility studies that 1) shall assess the financial performance of the unit 2) will be discussed in a contextual connection and transformation object 3) as a contribution to socio-cultural and economic values of the property 4) as a contribution to regional development 5) sustainable development. The course provides theoretical knowledge about:
- Development and change of architecture and urban design. - Ambient effect on people's use and experience - building conservation, energy use and new development possibilities.
The course emphasizes a high degree of independence. Students must through programming phase be able to understand and weigh the issues of the case and select methods to investigate these.Tools and presentations will range from a written material to presentation by means like film or web pages. It may be appropriate to carry out field work during the semester. This will not be mandatory.
Learning outcome:
Students will gain knowledge and skills for property development within the existing urban environment. Students will be able to describe and analyze urban space, get insight of urban transformation processes and be able to examine a development opportunities in the various area contexts. Students will work on different properties/plots with potential development scenarios. Through feasibility studies students gain knowledge and skills to consider consequences and effects of a development, and how this project development may be part of the overall objectives of achieving both higher density and increased urban quality and livability. The quality of the unbuilt spaces will have a major place in the course.
