The course is built up as a series of exercises and assignments. Lectures and field trips support the students¿ work on assignments. In the assignments general knowledge will be employed in particular situations. The use of creativity tools in project work and techniques for visual communication will be explored in several exercises. Assignment solving is gone through in plenary, so that the typical problems, which the assignments raise, will be discussed.
Students who have completed the course are expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes.
Knowledge: Students should be able to use the principles of plant composition. They should have an understanding of vegetation as dynamic system and the significance of management in the design process.
Skills: Students should be able to develop proposals for planting in various situations and scales. They should be able to use vegetation as a structuring and spatial landscape element and to suggest suitable plant species (shrubs, trees and perennials) to a site based on ecological, functional and aesthetic assessments. Students should be able to analyze and critically evaluate the plant application in a site as well as to use analytical tools and creative methods for idea generation as the basis for design, plant composition and plant selection. Students should be able to explore and communicate planting characteristics and dynamics with different visual tools and techniques. They should also be able to communicate their analysis and proposals through sketches, plans, models, ordering lists, etc.
General competences: Students should be able to critically reflect on their own and others' suggestions for planting design. They should be able to explain the significance of vegetation for challenges society is currently facing (i.g. climate change) and have insight into ethical issues relating to plant use and biodiversity.
The course makes use of different teaching methods: lectures, project work in groups, inspection, discussions in plenary, independent literature studies.
The students receive frequently guidance throughout the semester.
Lectures. Supporting literature will be announced at the course introduction. A selection of relevant literature will be available during the course. Recommended literature: Robinson, N. (2011): The Planting Design Handbook, 3.ed., Routledge. Reference books on plants (trees, shrubs, perennials).
Knowledge of Norwegian plant communities equivalent to PHG113 and knowledge of garden plants equivalent to the curriculum in PHG213. Competence and ability towards planning, idea generative processes, design and visisuell presentation equivalent to the compendium in the first to years of studies in landscape architecture at NMBU.

Assignments and exercises with continuing submissions. All assignments and exercises must be submitted and receive a passing grade. The last assignment and a documentation of the individual process will be evaluated with grades (A-F). Oral presentation is included.
Total workload is 450 hours, of which 325 hours are used for project work and individual studies.

An external examiner is used for approval of academic structure and content of the course. The examiner will take part in the review of the last assignment in the plenary and the evaluation of the submitted material.
