Course contents:

Lectures throughout the semester. Exercises will be discussed in plenary.

Students will gain advanced knowledge of the most important classes of substances within the natural products. Especially hydrocarbons, fatty acids, terpenes, phenols and alkaloids.

Learning outcome:

Students will gain advanced knowledge of the most important classes of substances within the natural products. Especially hydrocarbons, fatty acids, terpenes, phenols and alkaloids. Students will get familiar with structures, characteristic properties of the product classes, the most important sources, biosynthetic principles. Basic principles of isolation and spectroscopic characterization will also be part of this class.

KNOWLEDGE:

The student shall:

  • Know the basic natural product classes
  • Know what characterizes these natural product classes
  • Know where to find information of the different natural product classes
  • Have basic knowledge on the biological and medicinal effects of these product classes
  • Know where these compounds normally can be found
  • Know the most important biosynthetic pathways for these natural product classes

SKILLS:

The student shall:

  • Be able to place an unknown compound in the correct product class
  • Be able to split composite natural products in respective natural product classes
  • Be able to set up the most likely biosynthetic pathways for a natural product

GENERAL COMPETENCE:

The student shall:

  • Be able to identify and place a structure in its natural product class
  • Know how you can study biosynthetic pathways of natural products
