Course contents:
Lectures are given by the teacher throughout the semester.
Exercises will be discussed in plenary.
Learning outcome:
Students will gain advanced knowledge of the most important classes of substances within the natural products. Especially hydrocarbons, fatty acids, terpenes, phenols and alkaloids.
Students will get familiar with structures, characteristic properties of the product classes, the most important sources, biosynthetic principles.
Basic principles of isolation and spectroscopic characterisation will also be part of this class.

Paul M. Dewick: Medicinal Natural products. A Biosynthetic Approach. 3rd ed. A list of curriculum will be provided.
Prerequisites:
Basic Organic Chemistry equivalent to KJM210.
Recommended prerequisites:
Basic Biochemistry.

Assessment:

3.5 hours written exam.

If the number of candidates is 7 or less, the examination will be oral.

Nominal workload:
Lectures: 30 hours.
Discussion groups: 14 hours.
Individual study: 256 hours.

Three hrs per week (lectures and assignment reviews).
All together 30 hrs lectures and 14 hrs assignment review.

Examiner:
An external examiner approves the examination questions and marks 25 randomly selected examination papers.
An externalexaminer is used for the oral examination.
