Course contents:
Lectures. Laboratory work with subsequent report writing.
Learning outcome:
The student will learn to evaluate the use of various methods for separation (e. g. HPLC, GC) and conduct separation of organic compounds using GC, LC, various columns and evaluate alternative detectors and interpret the results.
The students will obtain in-depth knowledge of and insight into chromatographic theory, and knowledge of chromatographical practices and the theory behind various separation principles.
Through independent practical and theoretical study the students will achieve competence in comparing different methods, and gain a basic understanding for quantitative results related to for instance the pollution of food and environment.
The students will learn how to prepare and deliver effective oral and written presentations of technical information and of scientific results. They will learn critical thinking, complex and multidisciplinary problem solving, as well as accurately interpretation of current research literature.

'Chromatography Concepts - Contrasts' by James M. Miller. ISBN 978-0470-53025-2. Except Chapter 13.

General chemistry, KJM100
Organic chemistry, KJM210
Analytical chemistry, KJM240
Recommended prerequisites:
Physical Chemistry, KJM230.
Mandatory activity:
To be eligible for the course, all students need to pass a test in which all questions must be answered correctly.
Assessment:
Final written exam, 3.5 hours. Consists of several main issues to control that the candidate understand and can use the subject.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 26 hours.
Laboratory exercises: 60 hours.
Preparation for lectures: 20 hours.
Preparation for lab exercises: 30 hours.
Journal writing: 40 hours.
Individual study: 124 hours.

Chromatography is important for students in Chemistry, as well as Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Food Science or equivalent.

An external examiner approves the examination questions and evaluates 25 randomly selected examination papers.
