Course contents:

Sample preparation for MS- and LC-MS analysis of proteins, identification and quantification of proteins. It is emphasized that this course requires the ability and willingness to work independently and meticulously with advanced biochemical methods.

The practical part of the course introduces modern methods for for sample preparation, data acquisition and data analysis. The biological material used in the lab is relevant for current issues in medicine as well as bioremediation and energy production (UN sustainable development goals 3, 7, and 12).

Students will present one scientific article in a seminar. If necessary, this presentation must be given in English.

Learning outcome:


The student should have acquired a good understanding of the concepts of proteomics as an integrated part of an -omics approach to biological/biochemical analysis, and as distinct from classical protein analysis. The students should also have acquired a good understanding of the significance of sample preparation and basic modern mass spectrometric analysis of protein and peptide samples. In addition, the students should know the principals of bioinformatic data analysis and interpretation of proteomics data.


The students should have acquired fundamental skills in the laboratory, both in terms of sample preparation and mass spectrometric analysis of samples from different cell types/organisms. They should also be able to use a selection of data analysis tools to convert raw data to useful biological/bichemical information.

General Competence:

The students should have acquired a fundamental understanding of the proteomics discipline, to a point where they should be able to employ this analysis platform in their own work.

Lectures, oral presentation, independent laboratory work, assignment under supervision of instructors.

Contact with the teachers in the lectures and during the laboratory exercises.



Compendium, lecture notes, laboratory notes.
Biochemistry equivalent to KJB201.
Recommended prerequisites:
Protein Chemistry, KJB310, or equivalent. 
Mandatory activity:

Participation in all activities.

To pass the course, students have to be present at lectures as well as at the laboratory sessions.

Approved laboratory journal and approved oral presentation of a topic or a scientific paper.
Nominal workload:
Lectures 16 hrs.  Lab work 22 hrs.  Presentation 6 hrs.  Self study 81 hrs.

Reduction of credits:
Students with KJB420 (an extended version of KJB320) will not get credits for KJB320. KJB320 overlaps completely with the first 5 credits of KJB420.

Intensive course. Teaching daily, for three weeks in January:

Participation in all classes is mandatory.

Taught in uneven years only. 

An external examiner evaluates the course arrangements. Internal examiners evaluates the laboratory journals and the presentations.
