- Forage and concentrated feed in Norwegian animal production. Statistics and development.
- Forage and silage production: Grass and pasture species, catch crops species. Harvesting and conservation methods. Factors affecting chemical content and nutrient value. Principles for forage production and key factors for obtaining high crops production of good nutrient quality to support an increased sustainable food production from ruminants
- Feed ingredients applied in concentrated feed: Grain, oil seeds, pulses, soybean meal and new alternative protein ingredients. Factors influencing chemical content and nutrient value. Norwegian produced and imported feed ingredients. Principals for growing sustainable, high quality, grass and grain crops for animal feed (including soil type, tillage, climate adapted production management and techniques).
- Principles for feed evaluation for ruminants and monogastrics.
- Chemical analyses to determine nutrient content and energy in feed and feed ingredients.
- Concentrated feed and feed technology: Processing methods.
The course consists of a common part with PJH212.
After completing the course, the student should
- be able to describe the characteristics of different gras and grain species, principles for growing forage crops, oil seeds and grain and understand how managing practice can influence chemical content and nutrient value.
- know the extent and importance of Norwegian forage grass production.
- be able to explain key factors important for nutrient value and feed intake of forage grasses and silage.
- be able to describe principles and methods for growing, harvesting and conservation of forage.
- know the most important feed ingredients applied in concentrated feed to production animals, companion animals and fish.
- be able to describe the most applied methods for feed and nutrient analyses in animal production.
- understand feed declarations and be able to interpret feed analyses reports from a laboratory.
- be able to describe principles for computer programs composing concentrate feed recipes, and the different processing methods at a feed factory.
- be able to describe the importance and function of feed additives.
- know the regulations concerning feed concentrates and feed additives.
The student can evaluate whether feedstuffs are suitable for different animals based on the type of feed, the chemical content of the feed, feed digestibility and animal metabolism.
At the end of the course, the student will have an overview of the role of concentrated feed and roughage in Norwegian animal productions and know and be able to discuss the agricultural policy and socio-economic background for the aim of increased use of Norwegian feed resources rather than imports.

Students who have completed one or more of the overlapping courses HFE202, HFE203 or HFX202 previously, will be allowed to take the course, but with a 5-credit reduction.
External examiner shall approve the questions for the written exam and shall evaluate the answers from all the candidates.
