(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in the spring parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in the spring parallel and June block.
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2006-2007
Course contents:
Nuclear physics: radioactivity and decay, interactions of radiaton with matter, biological effects of radiation, dose calculations, radiation protection, applications of nuclear physics, fission, fission reactors and commercial nuclear reactors, fusion, progress towards fusion power. Climate physics: composition and thermodynamics of the atmosphere, aerosols and clouds, solar radiation, the earth"s radiation budget, the Greenhouse effect and climate change, climate models, elementary stratospheric chemistry and the ozone layer.
Learning outcome:
Obtain comprehensive understanding of ionising radiation and climate change.
- Understand how radiation is produced, measured and interacts with matter. Important topics are decay processes, interaction mechanisms, biological, health and environmental effects of ionising radiation, nuclear fission and fusion, reactor physics, commercial nuclear reactors. The relationship between dose terms, radiation dose calculations and the evaluation of these in relation to international recommendations on radiation protection should be well understood.
- The student should obtain good understanding of how global changes in the radiation climate and the composition of the atmosphere affect the environment as a whole. The global effects of the release of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect should be well understood. The student should be able to evaluate risks associated with environmental problems, for both the individual and society.
Learning activities:
Lectures: Four hours each week. Calculation exercises: Two hours of problem-solving, going through problems and colloquia each week.
Lectures that cover central ideas and theories in selected topics within environmental physics. In the calculation exercises, the student will solve problems on topics covered in the lectures. Selected exercises and topics will be discussed. Mandatory activities will focus on project writing.
Teaching support:
Web page with course information. The students will be able to make appointments with the lecturers to discuss the course material.
Syllabus:
A detailed syllabus will be handed out at the beginning of the course.
Prerequisites:
FYS101, FYS102 , FYS245 (can be taken in parallel)
MATH111, MATH112, MATH113
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Mandatory activities. Details will be given at the beginning of the course.
Assessment:
Written examination (3.5 hours).
Nominal workload:
17 hours per week for 18 weeks. In total 300 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Lectures: 52 hours. Exercises: 26 hours.
Examiner:
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
Allowed examination aids: Calculator handed out, other aids as specified
Examination details: One written test: A - E / Ikke bestått
