Lectures, 4 hours per week. Exercises and supervised colloquia, 4 hours per week. 3250 hours over 15 weeks equals 17 hours per week. Topics: Kinematics and dynamics, fluid dynamics, waves, relativity, gravity.
The students should be able to understand and use: basic principles in mechanics, understand how basic principles are used to describe complex natural phenomena, conservation laws, understand and use mathematical models in mechanical systems, fluid mechanics and waves, understand the mechanical models of contemporary society, understand that mechanics is used to model natural phenomena and that basic principles in mechanics are necessary for evaluating environmental consequences, be able to descibe different wave phenomena and the movement of light both quantitatively and qualitatively, describe, understand and calculate physical laws in non-accelerated coordinate systems, Newton's law of gravity. The aim of the course is for the students to understand how physics describes both natural and man-made systems and their behaviour. The students should be able to interpret physical laws using mathematical language. The students will learn to use laws and formulas to analyse and calculate complex physical systems.
Lectures on key concepts and theories and exercises on these. Supervised colloquia and compulsory tests. For the exercises, the students use both analytical solving and numerical solving on a computer.
Colloquia with fellow students. Supervision from the lecturer upon appointment. Supervision through the course web site.

Fysikk 1 from or FYS100. R2 from upper secondary school and MATH111 and MATH112 (taken simultaneously).
Fysikk 2 from upper secondary school.
Weekly compulsory colloquium.
Three written tests of 1 hour. The average grade from the two best tests: 25 % and the final written examination (3.5 hours): 75 % of the final course grade.
17 hours per week for 15 weeks, lectures 4 hours, exercise review 2 hours, calculation exercises 2 hours, supervised colloquia 2-4 hours, self-study 4-6 hours, colloquia 4-6 hours. Total: 250 hours.

Teaching period: 14 weeks (2 weeks for examinations). 13 weeks of organised teaching. Lectures: 2 x 2 hours x 13 weeks = 52 hours. Exercise review: 1 x 2 hours x 13 weeks = 26 hours. Calculation exercises: 2-4 hours x 13 weeks = 26-52 hours.
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidates exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
