The course consists of topics relevant to development and environmental management in India: Introduction to Indian society and culture Political organisation and governance systems, Public policies and governance, Desert ecology and livelihoods, decentralised governance and the Kerala model of development, climate change and environmental challenges in a below sea level ecosystem, doing field research in India. The course will be conducted in four different locations in Rajasthan, Northwest India and two different locations in Kerala, Southwest Kerala. The course includes lectures and discussions, field visits,meetings with relevant actors/stakeholders, reflections and brief write-ups by students. The course includes fieldwork, report writing and presentation by students.
The course is aimed at providing overall understanding of development and enviromental issues in India. The candidates will get advanced knowledge of the interconnected nature of environment and development issues.
The candidates will develop knowledge and skills to work with rural and urban issues in development and environmental governance, advanced understanding of the synergy between state and civil society organisations in India in implementing development and environmental policies and programmes, developing skills in conducting field research in a developing country context through hands-on fieldwork.
The candidates will be able to understand field issues, do quick data collection and analysis, and communicate it to both researchers and civil society in general
Lectures,discussions, field visits, seminars, field work in rural and/or urban environments in Rajasthan, India, data collection and analysis practice under the supervision of mentors at IDSJ and Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Trivandrum.
Daily contact between students and teachers.
A compendium will be handed out in advance of the course. Supplementary literature will be handed out when necessary

EDS312: Research Methods
1. 80% attendance in the lectures, seminars and field visits 2. Submission of a brief write up for each module related to the field visit. 3. Group work including data collection and anaysis, report writing and presentation
Fieldwork report and presentation - 45%, final written exam - 55% (A-F).

The course will consist of approx. 30 hours of lectures, 100 hours of field visits,30 hours of reflections and writing field reports,120 hours of data collection-analysis-writing Research report and approx.150 hours of selfstudy.
The course is a cooperation between NMBU, CDS and IDSJ and is offered at the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur, and CDS, India, from the beginning of August to mid-September.
The course falls under the broad umbrella of the SIU funded Norway-India higher education co-operation on 'Environment and Development in India' with Noragric/NMBU as the Norwegian partner and CDS and IDS as the Indian partners.
Final written exam will be graded by academic staff at IDSJ, CDS and NMBU.
