About this course

The course will introduce students to gender and development through examining the gendered dimensions of, among others, development processes, power and governance, the environment and resource management. Particular attention is given to exploring feminist epistemologies and gendered lenses at development as social, political, environmental and economic change. The course will include the following topics (can vary from year to year): Historical development of concepts of gender. Gender and feminist ecological issues, human rights, masculinities, power and politics. Gender in development discourse and policy. Gender and Human Rights. Gendered methodologies and analyses.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • Know about major perspectives and experiences within the field of gender and development
  • Understand the gender dimensions of the topics addressed

Skills:

  • Apply methods and analytical approaches in gender and development
  • Collect, analyse and share information on the applied topics addressed
  • Analyse power, discourse, policies and politics in a gender perspective

General competence:

  • Plan, evaluate, use as well as carry out independent analyses of the gender dimensions of themes in social, political, environmental and economic change
  • Aware of ethical and political perspectives linked to gender and development
  • Lectures, group work and take home exam paper.
  • Lectures, individual guidance and feed-back on presentations and assignments.
  • Social science competence to be able to study at master level
  • Portfolio assessment

    The grade in the course is set on the basis of an individual take home exam term paper (which may include an oral defence), participation in class and the presentation.

    The exam is in English.

  • External examiner will be used to evaluate the term paper.
  • 100% attendance
  • Approximately 40 % lectures and 60 % guided individual work.
  • Open. In case of need, priority will be given to M-GDS, M-IR and M-IES students.
