Course contents:

Key topics covered:

·      Definitions of core concepts, food -and nutrition security, entitlements, livelihoods, food sovereignty. Status of food insecurity and malnourishment

·      Global food production and the global food crisis. Symptoms and causes, structural problems and contrasting      solutions/ politics and governance

·      Interdisciplinary approaches to understand food security problems and solutions at the local level

·      The agriculture - environment- food- and nutrition security linkage (water, agrobio diversity, energy, landuse)

·      Entrepeneurship, food security and value chain development. Private /public partnerships

·      Food waste

·      Stakeholders and actors, International, national and local. Roles and responsibilities

·      Gender and food security

·      Conflict and hunger, food aid and emergencies

·      Food security indicators and monitoring

Learning outcome:

Food insecurity is one of the defining issues of our time. Nearly a billion people around the world do not get enough food, and more than 30% of young children suffer from some form of malnutrition. The poor in low income countries have been hardest hit by increases in global food and fuel prices. Continued climate change and environmental degradation further threatens food -and nutrition security.

The course will contribute to understand some of the complex issues and controversies that surround globalization of agriculture and the global food chain, and review and discuss factors that influence food-and nutrition security at the global, national, community and household level. By the end of the course, participants should be familiar with the topic to a level at which participants can engage with fellow practitioners, researchers, advisors and policymakers  interested in food security and development. The course will also be of interest to those looking at the more practical issues facing planning, implementation and monitoring food security programmes and projects at different levels. The course will have a theoretical and practical approach. The students will become familiar with concepts and theories and with on the ground realities. It will seek to present case studies to present insight in actual problems and solutions followed by group works and student seminars.  Guest lecturers with special knowledge and experience will be invited to share their perspectives.

Recommended prerequisites:
EDS 250, EDS 215 or general undergraduate knowledge of agriculture and the environment an advantage.
Mandatory activity:
Participation in 70% of the seminars. Seminar group presentation.
Assessment:
Individual term paper of 12 -15 pages (40%), and a 3hr written exam (60%).
