About this course

This is the introductory course for Bachelor students in International Environment and Development Studies. Its main objective is to provide students with an introduction to key topics and theories within the closely related fields of environment and development. The course will provide examples of environmental issues and social and political aspects of development.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student is able to describe/explain

  • key topics of the Bachelor program in "International Environment and Development Studies"
  • the various interdisciplinary theories and analytical approaches in Environment and Development Studies
  • important environmental and development challenges in the World today

Skills:

The student is able to

  • engage in thinking about key topics of International Environment and Development Studies
  • engage in academic discussion around environmental and social issues
  • write a basic academic text

General competence:

The student has a general overview and understanding of what International Environment and Development Studies are, and an ability of see the relevance of perspectives and approaches taught in the B-IEDS program for addressing environmental challenges and social injustices.

  • Teaching will be a combination of lectures and seminars.
  • No prerequisites.
  • Take home exam. Exam In English only. Pass/Fail
  • An external examiner will be involved in the forming and approval of the exam.
  • Participation in 80% of the lectures and seminars
  • Lectures and seminars (50 hours)
  • Exclusively for students accepted in the B-IEDS program.
  • Passed / Not Passed
  • Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (Generell studiekompetanse).
