Course contents:
The course covers the most important physical and chemical environmental variables in running waters, followed by topics such as energy flows and other major processes in freshwaters, eutrophication, organic pollution, acidification, climate change, hydropower, ecosystem services, and bioindication including the EU Water Framework Directive. The students give a seminar on selected parts of the syllabus. A field excursion followed by laboratory exercises provides a practical introduction to watercourse investigations.
Learning outcome:

Knowledge The students will acquire good insight into the ecological processes in rivers and lakes (with a focus on rivers), in addition to an understanding of relevant topics in present day watercourse management.

Skills The students should acquire a critical attitude towards published results, and should become familiar with reading, understanding and presenting scientific papers.

Competence The students should after the course be able to understand challenges in watercourse management, and contribute with solutions.

Learning activities:
Lectures by the responsible and contributing teachers. The students prepare a topic based on a particular part of the syllabus literature and subsequently hold a seminar for the other participants of the course. There will be a one-day field trip followed by two days in the laboratory, resulting in a group report on the pollution situation in a Norwegian watercourse.
Teaching support:
The teacher is available for support both directly and e-mail during office hours.
Lectures, several scientific papers; important background reading: Allan, J.D. and Castillo, M.M. 2007. Stream Ecology. Springer. Pensum and relevant background literature will be made available in Canvas.

Mandatory activity:
Field trip, laboratory work and report. Seminar. Mandatory attendance on the first course day (due to the restricted number of places).
Seminar/report: 20%. Group report: 10%. Oral exam: 70%. The seminar is evaluated, as is the group report from the field trip/laboratory exercise. The course has one final oral exam (about 30 minutes). All of the evaluated elements in the course must be passed to pass the course.
Nominal workload:
Structured teaching: ca. 50 hours. The students" own efforts such as report writing, seminar preparations, studying for exams etc.: ca. 250 hours.

Students that are not able to register for exam in the course can meet at the first lecture. Free seats will be distributed after the first lecture.
An external examiner is used for the oral exam.
