Course contents:

The main goal of ECN100 is to build professional and social affiliation and a safe learning environment.

The students continue to work with questions from ECN180 Global challenges I: Economics and sustainability. In this course, they will demonstrate how economics can be relevant to deal with some of the UN's 17 sustainability goals. They will mainly work in groups, join discussions, write a discussion note, make a presentation, and be opponent to another group's discussion note.

Learning outcome:

Knowledge goals:

  • Deep knowledge about at least one of the UN's sustainability goals.
  • Insight into important challenges related to this sustainability goal, where economics is particularly relevant.  
  • Knowledge about central topics in economics.
  • Understanding of central terms in economics, such as market, actors, resources, rationality, equilibrium and models.

Skill goals:

  • Able to use digital tools to collect information and critically assess different sources.
  • Able to analyze and discuss a complex question, and demonstrate how economics can be relevant to deal with this question.
  • Able to make a written and oral presentation of the analysis.

General competence:

  • Able to contribute in a constructive way in a team work, under time and performance pressure.

Lectures, reading of articles and textbook, overnight field trip , group work, write and present discussion note, discussion of others' discussion note.

Prerequisites:
ECN180 Global challenges I: Economics and sustainability
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Compulsory attendance at all lectures and field trips, submission of weekly assignments, term paper and participation in group work. Mandatory activities are valid only in the semester the course is being taken. 
Assessment:
Weekly assignments must be approved, in addition to one discussion paper, presenation of this paper, and one opponent assignment. All parts of the exam must be approved in the same semester. No re-examination. 
Nominal workload:
125 hours: Compulsory participation 50 hours, 75 hours for reading and writing discussion note.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse).
Reduction of credits:
ECN101 Economics for Environment and Development - 5 ECTS,
Type of course:
14 half days (4 hours) with compulsory attendance.
Note:
ECN100 is open only for bachelor students in Economics.
Examiner:
An external examiner will control the curriculum and assessment method.
