Course contents:
To prepare the student on the laboratory tasks an animal nurse will meet in the clinic. The subject will give an understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects associated with sampling and further treatment of the different types of test material for diagnostic and shipment
Learning outcome:

After the end of teaching the students shall

  • Be able to use microscope and know how a "Köhler" setting is performed
  • Be able to perform pipetting and know how a pipette is adjusted
  • Be able to calibrate a refractometer
  • Know how blood samples must be treated for diagnostics, storage and shipment, and be able to safeguard the test materials in a way that is gentle on the materials and gives the greatest probability for the most correct rest results.
  • Be able to assess if a blood sample is of diagnostic quality, and perform differential count in the blood smear.
  • Be able to identify platelet clumps and estimate the platelet count in the smear blood. 
  • Know about which factors that decide wether or not a urine sample will give a reliable result
  • Be able to prepare urine samples for diagnostic and shipment, and have knowledge about the most common diagnostic findings on microscopic examination of sediment
  • Know about the principles for withdrawal and treatment of skin samples and identify the most common parasites and diseases in and on the skin
  • Be able to take stool samples or instruct owner to do this for bacteriological and parasitological examination
  • Be able to perform Baermann Technique on fecal samples to detect parasites
  • Know about the principles around treatment and shipment of different types of biopsies and finnålsaspirater.
  • Be able to treat a semen sample correctly, and know how sampling of semen is performed. The student must also know how a a semen sample is evaluated.
  • The student should know how to maintain and treat diagnostic equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges and refractometer
Learning activities:

The course is a 2 week theoretical and practical teaching followed by one week where there will be arranged an OSCE station test.

The teaching will be a combination of theory and practice where the students learn how different samples are taken and how they should be treated to give reliable results.


Literature: Recommended books are on the literature list, and this will be changed from year to year.

Any additional material and compendia will be handed out in class or can be found on Canvas.

Recommended prerequisites:
Clinical practice including simple laboratory course from the first year of study. Extrernal practice and the subject DYR206: Pathology and animal nursing
Mandatory activity:
Mandatory participation to course activity. Ordinary rules of absence apply. 

Assssment: OSCE practical station test consisting of 4 stations

Assessment: Pass/fail


Requirements for eqipment:

Practical teaching is given in the laboratory auditorium (Aud 7). Lab coats are mandatory.
