Course contents:
The main focus of this practice period is on anesthesia and pain relief, infection control, rehabilitation, laboratory work and administrative work in the clinic, as well as further training in nursing skills. By the end of the clinical practice students should master all work performed by veterinary nurses in a large small animal clinic. Munch emphasis is placed on generic competency and an understanding of academic medicine as research based.
Learning outcome:

Aim: To provide the students with knowledge and practical experience with the running of a clinic and with medical treatment of animals.

Learning outcomes:Having followed the course, students should

  • Have a good knowledge and practical skills in infection control.
  • Have a knowledge of rehabilitation.
  • Have a good knowledge and practical skills in laboratory work and using diagnostic aids.
  • Have a knowledge of fundamental principles of administration and the running of a clinic.
  • Have a knowledge of reception work.
  • Be able to reflect on and evaluate their own skills and limitations.
  • Be able to communicate professionally with colleagues and the public.
  • Have an understanding and motivation for lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Have an understanding of the importance of research based knowledge.

Practice requirements to be completed during clinical practice.

The Complete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing or Clinical Textbook of Veterinary Nursing as well as recommended literature.

Mandatory activity:

The rules regarding absence apply as in other practice.

Students are evaluated during their clinical practice and must submit all approved documentation into their e-portfolio. Students may be required to submit an expanded journal during their clinical practice, as well as reflection notes, if necessary for evaluating their understanding of a given subject.

Competence and skills are evaluated on the basis of the electronical reflection portfolio, as well as the student evaluation form.

All clinical practice is compulsory and may include weekend, evening and night shifts in the horse clinic and small animal clinic. ALL unapproved absence must be made up for before end of term in order for the diploma and authorization to be issued.

Shifts are compulsory also on weekends and holidays. If documented within five days, the studies administration may approve absence of up to 20% of the practice period, which will not have to be made up for.

In addition, students must have their study requirements (e-portfolio) approved, as well as all reflection notes and journals concerning the clinical practice.In order to pass clinical practice students must be able to document an acceptable degree of knowledge, required skills and attitudes in accordance with the practice manual. All weeks must be approved according to the approval routines.

Note:
Workwear according to current regulations, as agreed with the external clinic in question. Name plate with full name and ¿veterinary nursing student¿. Bandage scissors. Nurse watch with seconds hand. Thermometer. Notepad and pencil. Stethoscope is recommended, but not required.
