Course contents:

Duration:10 weeks 

Clinical practice in external private small animal clinics

The main focus of this practice period is on anesthesia and pain relief, infection control, rehabilitation, laboratory work and administrative work in the clinic, as well as further training in nursing skills. By the end of the clinical practice students should master all work performed by veterinary nurses in a small animal clinic. Munch emphasis is placed on generic competency and an the importance of research based medicine.

The course will include a course in rehabilitation (3 days).

Learning outcome:

Aim: To provide the students with knowledge and practical experience with the running of a clinic and with medical treatment of animals.

Learning outcomes. Having followed the course, students should:

  • Have good knowledge and skills in anesthesia and pain relief.
  • Have good knowledge and practical skills in infection control.
  • Have knowledge of rehabilitation.
  • Have good knowledge and practical skills in laboratory work and using diagnostic aids.
  • Have knowledge of fundamental principles of administration and the running of a clinic.
  • Have  knowledge of reception work.
  • Be able to reflect on and evaluate their own skills and limitations.
  • Be able to communicate professionally with colleagues and the public.
  • Have an understanding and motivation for lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Have an understanding of the importance of research based knowledge.
Learning activities:

Practical instruction in the clinic and mandatory submissions.

Specific skill requirements are given in lists made accessible in Canvas.

Practice requirements to be completed during clinical practice.

The Complete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing or Clinical Textbook of Veterinary Nursing as well as recommended literature.

Mandatory activity:

Clinical pactice is compulsory and 100% attendance is required. Students have three days of self attested sick leave at their disposal, which may also be used for funerals in the immediate family. However, a period of 14 days' attendance is required between each day of leave. Any absence beyond these three days must be attested by a physician and a medical certificate handed in to the school's practice coordinator. If the absence 20% per rotation, this absence must be made up for later. To what degree is up to the discretion of the those in charge of the block. Students must make up for all unapproved absence in its entirety. No dispensation is given for medical reasons. All absence must be reported to the clinic in question, or, when this is not possible, to the person in charge of organizing the clinical practice. See also the rules of the regulation.

Students are evaluated during their clinical practice, and must submit compulsory written material to given deadlines in Canvas. Students may be required to submit an expanded journal during clinical practice.

Student progression is evaluated through a written list of skills, which the students themselves bring with them to the clinic. The  lists are to be signed and submitted to the practice coordinator for approval at the end of clinical practice.

Note:

Workwear according to current regulations, as agreed with the external clinic in question. Name plate with full name and "veterinary nursing student". Bandage scissors. Nurse watch with seconds hand. Notepad and pencil.

Stethoscope and thermometer is recommended, but not required.
