Course contents:

Aim:

The teaching shall give the students practical and scientific methodology for a good start at, and completion of, a bachelor in animal nursing at NMBU Veterinary college.

Contents

  • Scientific authorship: principles and practical assignments.
  • Scientific method: planning and design of research projects.
  • Surveys: planning and implementation.
  • Scientific literature: searching databases and use of reference tools.
  • Data management: the creation and use of special database.
  • Errors in scientific method: random and systematic errors.
  • Statistics: overview of the current figures, tables and analysis
Learning outcome:

After completing the course, the student should:

Have necessary method-expertise to complete a bachelor in animal nursing at NMBU veternary college and acquire a basic understanding of natural sciences researches through:

  • Could make a good plan for the work with a bachelor based on current strandard protocol for NMBU.
  • Could make relevant cover letter and registration form for a implementation of a questionaire related to own bachelor, and a relevant database accoring to standard template.
  • Be able to explain main types of experimental design and current statistical methods, and know which design and analysis that are appropriate in own bachelor's thesis.
  • Know the principles for scientific authorship, have established a word-file for writing of own task with base inn standard template, and could use EndNote to save references and make reference lists.
  • Understand the meaning of critical reading in scientific articles, and understand how systematical and random errors could give misleading information both in published articles and in own specialization assignment.

Make a protocol for own bachelor project.

Math100 is offered as to enhance the competence in mathmatics in front of the course.

  • The students must have clarified the concrete purpose with the thesis before the course starts.
Mandatory activity:
It is no requirement to presence.
Assessment:

The course is passed when the following is fulfilled

  • Passed MC-test in KIFO-course (friday)
  • Passed MC-test on last day of the course.
  • Filed, presented and approved protocol with accompanying documents.

If the student do not pass the MC-test it will need to be repeated and passed by three weeks or in connection with the course following semester.

Grading: Pass - Fail

Equipment Requirements:

  • Own portable computer.
Examiner:
Sensor is mandatory part of quality assurance system for the MC-tests used.
