About this course

Most people will benefit from understanding business administration during their working life, even if you don't necessarily work directly with business administration. It is important to understand the fundamental connections between the company's strategies and plans, budgets, organisation, the profit and loss statement and the balance sheet, all within the framework of the company's important contribution to sustainable development. The course provides an introduction to contexts in business economics - primarily in accounting, business management and finance, but also in organizational subjects, marketing and strategy. following topics are covered:

Cost and cost behavior; Markets; Product costing, Cost allocation; Short term production decisions and trade-offs; Financial accounts; Time value of money; Capital budgeting.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student:

  • Has an interdisciplinary understanding and basic insight into how businesses, the economy, and the stock market function, and how these influence society.
  • Has knowledge of key concepts and familiarity with important tools used in the analysis of business economics issues (including accounting, financial management, finance, marketing, strategy, organizational theory, and psychology).
  • Has an understanding of corporate social responsibility and sustainability from a business economics perspective.

Skills:

The student:

  • Can analyze and interpret economic data to assess a company's financial situation, including financial statements, key financial figures, and market data.
  • Can apply business economics methods and models to solve fundamental economic problems within accounting, financial management, and finance.
  • Can communicate economic assessments both in writing and orally in a professionally precise manner, adapted to different target audiences.

General Competence:

The student:

  • Can master key business economics terminology.
  • Can think critically and reflect on the role of businesses in society.
  • Can apply knowledge at an overall level to understand how businesses function.
  • Can extract essential information from a company's annual report.
  • Learning activities

    Lectures, in Norwegian, practice lessons (voluntary - digital and physical), quizzes and practice tasks. The lectures will be campus-based. Recordings of the lectures are not offered.

    Practice lessons = Seminars with seminar leaders. No registration required, just appear to the seminar that suits your schedule better.

  • Assessment method
    Written exam on Campus. The final examination of 3 hours counts 100%.

  • Examiner scheme
    An external examiner is involved in reviewing the course design and the tests.
  • Mandatory activity

    10 quizzes (multiple choice). The student must pass 6 of the quizzes to qualify for exam.

    Approved mandatory activity from a previous year remains valid upon retaking the course.

  • Notes
    Bachelor's students in Business Administration, who have been admitted in the fall of 2018 or later, cannot take BUS100 as part of their bachelor's degree. The same applies to students in the bachelor's program in Economics, Management and IT. These programs have mandatory courses in the program that overlap with BUS100.
  • Teaching hours

    Lectures: 2 hours per week.

    Seminars/problem solving exercises: 0-2 hours per week.

  • Reduction of credits
    5 ECTS-credits overlap with BUS100F, INN200, INN200F, INN201-B and BUS101.

    Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
