Limits of class size:
Maximum 15 students because of limitation in the laboratory
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Autumn parallel, .
Course frequency: Annually. The course will not be given autmn 2014.
First time: Study year 2011-2012
Preferential right:
Bachelor in plant science: B-PV og M-PV, B-BIOL
Course contents:
Analysis and quantitative description of plant growth. Effect of light, temperature and other climatic factors. Phenological and morphological development. Leaf area index, light interception, photosynthesis and net radiation use efficiency. Potential plant growth,evapo-transpiration, water limited and nitrogen limited plant growth. Allocation (root, shoot/leaf, storage organs) and translocation of assimilates to different plant organs through the growing season.
Learning outcome:
The course is intended for students in plantproduction:
Knowledge of how crop and leys plants respond to environmental factors through fundamental physiological processes as photosynthesis, respiration, water balance, changes in morphology and phenological development. Training in integrating this knowledge in order to understand crops growth rhythm, yield, yield index and interaction with other plants. Dynamic growth models will be used as a mean to achieve this integration. Knowledge about how to evaluate the models" performance. Experience about models strength and pitfalls, and of how models can be used to estimate impacts of climate changes and of nitrogen supply. Experience in the quantification of growth processes at field scale, for example with genotypes of varying earliness.
Learning activities:
Theory will be presented in the lectures. In the laboratory course the effects of light quality and of temperature will be demonstrated. Measurement of photosynthesis combined with growth analysis and with dynamic growth modeling will be used to illustrate the importance of climatic factor for plant growth. Field measurements of leaf area index and growth will be used to estimate radiation use efficiency by the canopy. See also Compulsory activities.
