See description for BIO320. BIO420 is an extended course specially for PhD students and others with particular interest for developmental biology. They will get to focus more by writing an extended assay allowing a better insight into developmental principles and a more thorough understanding.
Understanding of the advanced gene regulation which determines the specification of different types of cells in multicelled organisms. The students are to gain insight into recent research in the field of model organisms such as the fruit fly and the Arabidopsis. The students will achieve this depth by being assigned a broad field in which to conduct a project and a smaller field of their own choosing in developmental biology (may well be connected with own research). This depth is designed to lead students to an analysis of material and synthesis by drawing their own conclusions based on the syllabus. It is great if the course can help students to consider the application of developmental biology in research. It is also a goal for the students to be given an introduction to bioethics and thereby develop a certain understanding of different fundamental views so that they are able to argue for or against these and draw conclusions for instance on how to view research on genetic engineering.

Textbook: Wolpert: Principles of Development, primary articles, semester assignments and additional syllabus of own choice.
The students are normally required to attend 50% of the student presentations and discussion groups, unless other arrangement due to practical issues as localization of study etc.
Combined assessment: the semester assignment counts 33% (1/3), the oral examination make out the rest of the evaluation. The oral examination is expected to last 25 minutes. Evaluation of activities in the course, presentation and semester assignment, and a final oral examination (ca 25 minutes).
