Course responsible: Hilde-Gunn Opsahl Sorteberg
ECTS credits: 10
Faculty: Faculty of Biosciences
Teaching language: EN, NO
(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Spring parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Spring parallel.
Course frequency: Odd years
First time: Study year 2007-2008
Course contents:
Model organisms in developmental biology are covered, the fruit fly,  C elegans, stem cell regulation and Arabidopsis. Principles of development and the significance of genes controlling this. The lectures are joint with BIO320, and the dierence is hat the paper is larger in BIO40. The project paper gives the students i depth understanding in one topic and ensures that the syllabus changes every year due to updated primary articles, which act as a point of departure for assigned projects.
Learning outcome:
Understanding of the advanced gene regulation which determines the specification of different types of cells in multicelled organisms. The students are to gain insight into recent research in the field of model organisms such as the fruit fly and the Arabidopsis. The students will achieve this depth by being assigned a broad field in which to conduct a project and a smaller field of their own choosing in developmental biology (may well be connected with own research). This depth is designed to lead students to an analysis of material and synthesis by drawing their own conclusions based on the syllabus. It is great if the course can help students to consider the application of developmental biology in research. It is also a goal for the students to be given an introduction to bioethics and thereby develop a certain understanding of different fundamental views so that they are able to argue for or against these and draw conclusions for instance on how to view research on genetic engineering.
Learning activities:
Lectures, project presentations and project writing with colloquia.
Syllabus:
Textbook: Wolpert: Principles of Development 2. ed., primary articles, semester assignments and additional syllabus of own choice.
Prerequisites:
BIO220/BIO200
Recommended prerequisites:
BIO322 (BIO310).
Mandatory activity:
The students are required to attend at least 50% of the presentations and discussion groups.
Assessment:
The semester assignment counts 33%. Continuous assessment for the student and the oral examination make out the rest of the evaluation. The oral examination is expected to last 25 minutes. Evaluation of activities in the course, presentation and semester assignment, and a final oral examination (ca 25 minutes).
Nominal workload:
300 hours
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Reduction of credits:
BIO320 - 5 credits.
Type of course:
20 lectures, semester assignment, discussion groups for presentations and writing of semester assignment.
Examiner:
External examiner at oral examination.
