Course contents:
The main focus of the course will be on the understanding of mechanisms for cell communication, different receptor groups, principles for intracellular signal transduction including adapter proteins, scaffolding proteins and activation of central transcription factors.
Regulation of gene transcription in eukaryotic cells, protein sorting and vesicular transport will be reviewed.
We will also focus on mechanisms that control cell division, cell growth and cell death.
The course will also give the students an introduction to central concepts of stem cell biology.
Learning outcome:
After completing the course, students should have a thorough understanding of molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic cell biology. Understanding the principles of cell communication, cell interaction and intracellular signal transduction will be given priority.
The students should acquire knowledge about central signaling pathways controlling cell growth and differentiation processes, how these signaling pathways are regulated and which transcription factors that are affected.
These learning aims should contribute to the students" development of skills, enabling them to acquire relevant literature on the subject and to formulate scientific problems within cell biology.

B. Alberts et al.: Molecular Biology of the Cell, 6th edition, Garland Science, 2015.
Prerequisites:
Cell biology corresponding to BIO100.
Biochemistry corresponding to KJB200.
Molecular Biology corresponding to BIO210.
Recommended prerequisites:
BIO200 (formerly BIO220 or HFM200).
Assessment:
Written exam, 3.0 hrs, counts 100 %.
Nominal workload:
Lectures 32 hrs.
Colloquia 8 hrs.
Preparations and self study 260 hrs.
