The following topics will be covered: Mitosis and Meiosis Mendelian Genetics Modification of Mendelian Ratios Chromosome Mutations: Variation in Number and Arrangement Linkage and Chromosome Mapping in Eukaryotes DNA Structure and Analysis DNA Replication and Synthesis Chromosome Structure and DNA Sequence Organization The Genetic Code and Transcription Translation and Proteins Gene Mutation, DNA repair, and Transposition Recombinant DNA Technology Quantitative Genetics Population Genetics Evolutionary Genetics Conservation Genetics
The students should obtain a basic understanding of classical genetics, the structure and function of DNA, molecular genetics and evolutionary processes. The students will see where genetics fit in with biology. The course should give the students the necessary foundation for taking advanced courses in genetics, genomics and biotechnology, livestock breeding, plant breeding and medicine.
Supervision is given in connection with the lectures and course work, and the teachers have designated office hours for consultations. These will be announced in class and on the course website.

General chemistry equivalent to KJM100.
Previous knowledge of cell biology (BIO100) and microbiology (BIO130) recommended. The students are also recommended to take BIO121 in order to gain a practical understanding of genetics.
There will be web-based tests for each of the lectured chapters from the book. The students have to complete 15 of the tests to pass the course.
Theory and understanding of the concepts will be tested in a final exam of 3 hours. The final exam is a multiple choice test.
Lectures: 40 hours. Self-study: 110 hours.
