Course contents:
Bachelor's students in Biotechnology have the opportunity to write a bachelor thesis within a relevant research area. The thesis is developed in consultation / collaboration with supervisor(s) within one of the themes:
- Molecular Biology
- Biochemistry
- Bioinformatics
The thesis is an independent, academic work equivalent to a half semester. It may include literature study, laboratory work, fieldwork, processing and analyzing data. The thesis will be structured in line with academic standards. Students receive supervison in this work.
Learning outcome:
KNOWLEDGE: Having written an 15 credits' Bachelor's thesis, the student has gained knowledge about a specific topic and relevant theories, processes, tools and methods.
SKILLS: The student has got skills in finding, evaluating and referring to information and present this addressing the problem. Moreover, the student gained skills in applying scientific knowledge, make reasoned choices and handels relevant professional tools, techniques and forms of expression.
GENERAL COMPETENCE: The student has gained insight in research planning and the process of conducting an independent project and the dissemination of academic issues.
Learning activities:
The student is entitled to 20 hours of supervision (including assessment of the Bachelor`s thesis).
Teaching support:
Students are encouraged to use available courses and information at the University Library and the Writing Center at NMBU.
Syllabus:
Relevant literature identified in cooperation with the supervisor.
Prerequisites:
Completed 120 credits and good background knowledge in the relevant issue.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
The completed contract between the student and the supervisor (s), with a detailed timetable, handed in at the Faculty before work on the Bachelor`s thesis can begin.
Assessment:
A writing assignment counts 100%. A Bachelor's thesis may have a final oral discussion as part of the assessment.
Nominal workload:
450 hours
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in science.
Type of course:
The student work full-time with the thesis in one quarter of a semester.
Note:
The main supervisor must be employed at NMBU. In addition there may be internal or external co-supervisors connected to the thesis.
Examiner:
Internal and external examiner assesses the Bachelor's thesis and any oral discussion
