Course contents:
The topic is project based. The students shall work in groups and carry out a project including project planning, feed production, and carrying out a nutritional experiment with fish (salmonids or tilapia), and relevant analyses. The students will be supervised through lectures given bu specialists in feed development, feed ingredients, fish nutrition, and growth. The results shall be presented by the students at the end of the course.
Learning outcome:


  • Plan and supervise formulation and processing of fish feeds for based on nutrition, physiology, environment, and sustainability
  • Work in team to plan, conduct and report hypothesis-based nutrition research aiming at improved performance in farmed fish

General competence

  • Collect, analyse, and synthesize information and use it to present a given topic in nutrition of predatory or omnivorous farmed fish
Learning activities:
Lectures on relevant subjects. Workshops including introduction to written presentation and use of computer-based calculation programme for feed management. Practical and longitudinal project including formulation, feeding and biological and chemical evaluation of the diet in a feeding experiment. The group project can either focus warm water (tilapia) or cold water (salmonids) fish species.
Teaching support:
Groups of students will be responsible for the preparation of specific yopics (feed formulation and processing, research planning) under guidance of the main teacher. They shall update their fellow students in these topics, so that the knowledge can be utilized in the experiments carried out during the course. The main teacher will be available 1-2 hours a week for discussion and questions.
Textbook: Halver, J.E. and Hardy, R.W. (ed.) 2002. Fish Nutrition, Third edition. Academic Press, 824 pp. Lectures and other background material will be uploaded in Canvas.
General nutrition at 200 level (HFE200), or equivalent.
Recommended prerequisites:
HFE305, Feed Manufacturing Technology.
Mandatory activity:
Participation in all parts of the practical feed project including written and oral group presentation.
Oral exam at the end of the course. In order to take the oral exam, the students must have participated actively in the practical activities of the course.

Type of course:
2-4 hours of lectures and theoretical exercises per week. 4-10 hours of practical projects per week. The remaining time is spent on the individual project, literature preparation etc. Activity level: 50 % of full time.
The learning is based on "learning by doing". The students must therefore attend all exersizes.
Questions and expected answers for the oral exam are made in collaboration with the examiner. Both the teacher and the external examiner are present at the oral examination.
