The course is organised around three types of empirical design used in social science research: explorative design (including interviews and focus groups), descriptive design (including surveys) and causal design (inkluding experiments). Emphasis will be placed on the students' understanding of the possibilities and limitations of these three designs and how the concrete question that is analysed influences them, and which of the designs should be chosen and how the shaping of the chosen design determines what conclusions can be drawn on the basis of the conducted investigation.
The course aims to give the students insight into how one can plan and conduct empirical analyses of questions in the social sciences. The course aims to enable students to conduct investigations that can endure a critical evaluation based on the most common quality criteria that are used for such investigations.
Students will gain an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of some of the most common methods used in social science research, gain an understanding of how the concrete problems to be analyzed has implications for which of the methods should be chosen, and how the design of the study determines what conclusions can be drawn on the basis of the study.

Textbook and some additional reading.
Written examination, 3 hours (counts 2/3 of the total grade). Group assignment (counts 1/3 of the total grade). If you fail one of them, you fail the course.
The grade for the group assigment is only valid the semester the assigment is written and for the subsequent re-take exam.
A re-take exam (counts 2/3 of the total grade) is organized in the following semester for those students who passed the group assignment, but failed the individual written exam or with a legitimate reason (illness) for absence at the written exam.

2 hours per week with classroom lectures + a few weeks with 2 hours per week with other activities.
An external examiner will assess the curriculum and the exam. Grades will be set by the internal examiner (teacher).
