About this course

The course provides an introduction and basic competence in practical change management. Training is given in what methods, procedures and tools are available to make change happen in an organization.

Students gain a good understanding of how to proceed in practice to prepare, implement and maintain changes employees and the organization must go through. Topics such as: how to create the ability and will to change; handling change resistance; how to communicate the change; what activities the management and the project team can do to create enthusiasm and implementation ability are reviewed

Knowledge

The student:

  • Has advanced knowledge of what is needed for changes to take hold in practice.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of various analytical tools that can be used throughout the change process.
  • Can apply knowledge on how to identify barriers to change processes and understand which elements in an organization play a critical role in building change capacity.
  • Can analyze what is necessary for success in change processes and identify factors that may hinder success.

Skills

The student:

  • Can analyze and critically address challenges that may arise in organizations or projects related to change processes.
  • Can analyze how different parts of the organization impact the change process and their role in ensuring the success of the change.
  • Can use relevant theories and methods to translate learning into practical activities within a change project.
  • Can implement actions that promote success in change processes and understand the role of change agent or participant in a change team.

The student:

  • Can analyze relevant challenges and opportunities arising in connection with change in organizations.
  • Can apply their knowledge and skills to practical change processes in various types of organizations and projects.
  • Can communicate their analyses and solutions related to change management in a clear and understandable way.
  • Can communicate effectively about change processes, including how to motivate employees and handle their mental models during change.
  • Can contribute to developing an organization with high change capacity by using motivation techniques and understanding human reactions to change.
  • Learning activities
    Lectures and group work. Implementation of group assignment with focus on case to handle difficult changes. Active participation is expected.
  • Teaching support
    No special beyond teacher contact.
  • Assessment method
    3,5 hours written exam on campus (counts 100 % of the grade).

  • Examiner scheme
    An external examiner reviews and approves the arrangements for the exam.

    AOS235 is taught in the spring parallel with lectures on campus. A digital version of the course (AOS235F Practical Change Management - Online version) is offered in the autumn parallel.
