Course contents:
The course is made up of four parts: (a) General societal change and regulatory framework, (b) Strategic adjustment: Organizational structure and culture, (c)  Governance structures with emphasis on the role and functions of the board of directors, (d) Leadership and leader roles. The topics are illuminated through practical cases and relevant theory. Emphasis is placed on developing connections between the four topics by using realistic examples and relevant theory.
Learning outcome:

The course has two goals: First, to make our elected student representatives proficient in their roles as elected student representatives at NMBU. Second, to give knowledge and understanding of topics in organization theory that are relevant for a leader.

Knowledge: (i) Gain knowledge about NMBU as an organizational system, how the system is structured, how it works, and what strategic challenges the organization is faced with due to current social developments. (ii) Core concepts as vision, goals and strategy. (iii) Measures used to implement strategies. (iv) Tasks and work of the board. (v) Leadership vs. management, leadership and change. (vi) Leader roles and behaviour.

Skills: (i) Be able to participate in teamwork under time- and performance pressure. (ii) Active participation ina board and be able to distinguish between the board's and the manager's responsibilities, (iii) Gain insight in and reflect over conditions for mastering a leader role. 

General competences: (i) Be able to apply theoretical knowledge as well as experiences from the roles as student electives at NMBU when analyzing organizational challenges, strategies and strategy implementation in other settings. (ii) Be able to identify and reflect over ethical issues in board work and management

Learning activities:
The course uses a variety of different learning methods: core lectures, seminars, class discussions, individual literature studies, colloquium work, project work in teams and presentations (written and oral).

Group discussions with supervision, feed back on assignments.

Prerequisites:
Practical leadership and management experience.
Recommended prerequisites:
AOS130 and AOS230 or equivalent courses..
Mandatory activity:

Participation in groups work, lectures and seminars.

Individual written assignments.

Assessment:
Portfolio assessment. Grading: A-F.
Nominal workload:
125 hours.
Entrance requirements:
25 participants. Priority: Elected student representatives at NMBU.
