Spaceborne Forest Monitoring
Open seminar about the use of satellite imagry and cloud computing platforms to monitor the condition of forests.
Speaker: Tamás Molnár PhD, Research Fellow, University of Sopron, Hungarian Forest Research Institute.
Molnár has been part of building a novel spaceborne approach that utilises high-resolution satellite imagery and cloud computing platforms to monitor the condition of forests. They used Artificial Intelligence algorithms to study land-cover attributes, vegetation health change and disturbances, species composition, or biomass in an automated way. The combination of satellite-based thematic maps with ground-based reports yielded a suitable dataset to allow testing and validation of this method. They propose that areas with different landcover, e.g. agricultural lands or orchards could also be surveyed using this approach.
