Teaching and exam period:The bachelor thesis is written during the fall semester and delivered according to guidelines in December, or during the spring semester and delivered according to guidelines in May.

About this course

Bachelor students in Forest sciences may write a bachelor thesis based on a research question developed in collaboration with the supervisor. This is an independent work, which may include literature survey, laboratory work, fieldwork, and data analysis. The thesis will be structured according to academic standards. The work will be carried out under supervision.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Having written a 15 credits bachelor thesis, the student has gained knowledge about a specific topic and relevant theories, processes, tools and methods.

Skills

The student has got skills in finding, evaluating and referring to information, and presenting this in order to address the problem. Moreover, the student has gained skills in applying scientific knowledge, making reasoned choices and dealing with relevant professional tools, techniques and forms of expression.

General competence

Under supervision, the student has gained expertise in planning and conducting an independent project, and in the dissemination of academic issues.

  • Learning activities
    Independent work with guidance from an academic employee.
  • Teaching support

    The student is encouraged to benefit from courses and information from the University Library and The Writing Centre at NMBU.

    Each student has the right to 20 hours of supervision from a supervisor with competence in the subject. The supervisor should be available for the student to an extent that provides the appropriate support within given timeframes.

  • Syllabus
    Based on an independent search for literature and discussions with supervisors.
  • Prerequisites
    Passed 150 ects and with sound knowledge in relevant topics.
  • Assessment method
    The grade is based on the submitted bachelor thesis.

  • Examiner scheme
    An external sensor is evaluating the thesis.
  • Mandatory activity
    A contract between the student and the supervisor(s), including a time plan, should be delivered to the faculty before the work with the bachelor thesis can start.
  • Teaching hours
    Supervision is undertaken based on agreements between the student and the supervisor(s)
  • Preferential right
    Third-year students in the bachelor's degree program in Forest sciences.
