“I can safely say that everyone in my class got a job either before the master’s was delivered or over the summer,” says Sigrid Løyning who completed her master’s degree in geomatics in spring 2020. Now she works as an engineer for the Norwegian Mapping Authority.

“I can safely say that everyone in my class got a job either before the master’s was delivered or over the summer,” says Sigrid Løyning who completed her master’s degree in geomatics in spring 2020. Now she works as an engineer for the Norwegian Mapping Authority.

Sigrid Løyning is 23 years old and comes from Sauda in Rogaland. She has lived for five years at Ås while she took her master’s degree in geomatics. As soon as her studies were over, she got a job where she could use her education, as an engineer for the Norwegian Mapping Authority in Hønefoss. Here she monitors the Earth’s surface using satellites.

Her education gives her opportunities to join the fight for a sustainable society. “Here we can follow what is happening with the world, for example deforestation, temperature increases, ocean levels, and ice melting,” says Sigrid.

Many students know that they have a relevant job to go to many months before they deliver the master’s thesis.

Easy to get a job with an education from NMBU

Sigrid’s experience is that students from NMBU are sought after in the workforce. Many students know that they have a relevant job to go to many months before they deliver the master’s thesis.

“Many positions are announced already in December,” says Sigrid. She believes that the science education offered at NMBU provides many opportunities for working life.

Strong academic environment at NMBU

She describes a study environment where everyone was close to the subject, each other and the lecturers. “We had our own rooms at the university where only those who studied the same subject as me could get in. We call it an academic home. Here we have seats and a fridge and the possibility to spar with each other.”

“Yes, and there was space for silliness and nonsense too, of course,” says Sigrid. “And if they needed the help of a professor, the door was always open. At NMBU, the professors know you. There is a low threshold for asking for help, which is very nice,” says Sigrid.

We visited Sigrid's former supervisor and lecturer, Associate Professor Ivar Maalaen-Johansen. Ivar said that former students are always welcome. Before we stopped by, Ivar was working on the alumni program at NMBU. This is something NMBU is focusing on so that former students can stay professionally up to date and build strong networks.

Hard to get in

One of the securities of studying at NMBU is the high academic quality of your fellow students. NMBU is one of Norway's most difficult universities to be admitted to. Sigrid applied to several programs, but the average was high, so she was happy to get into geodata.

“I had worked hard for my science competency from high school, so I was very determined to use it,” says Sigrid.

Good student environment

Sigrid was not just drawn to NMBU by the academic challenges and an education that made it easy to get a good job.

I had heard a lot about the good study environment at NMBU, both from friends and acquaintances and from the counselors at the school,” says Sigrid. She worked as a committee leader for the student festival UKA, which is held every other year. She was a study ambassador for NMBU and was active in the student association Kollegium Alfa.

“It suited me incredibly well,” says Sigrid. Here she got to experience many of the fun, social traditions NMBU students have. It looked a little strange from the outside at first, but it was great to get involved! Not only was it social, but it was also academically useful.

“We had meetings where we helped each other with job searches and CV writing. We had former students drop by to talk about their experiences with education from NMBU.”

An education connected to working life

NMBU offers studies that are closely tied to industries and that can be used for something concrete. When it was time to write the master's thesis, the university had contacted relevant companies to get suggestions for master’s theses’ topics that companies needed answers to.

Sigrid ended up writing about how to use laser measurements from aircraft to map the seabed.

This is part of a larger research project, and my thesis has now been sent out to several companies that can use it in their business,” says Sigrid.

Warm recommendations

“I really recommend studying at NMBU. There are so many positive things here that you don’t find anywhere else.”
