Guidelines for use of artificial intelligence at REALTEK

Are you allowed to use artificial intelligence (AI) as a student? We have created guidelines for how you can use AI as an tool in your academic work.

The guidelines apply to students at the Faculty of Science and Technology (REALTEK).

How you can use artificial intelligence (AI):

  1. You can use AI on assignments that you should submit. If you use AI, you must do so in accordance with the guidelines described below.
  2. You are responsible for quality assurance, and making sure that the AI-generated information is reliable. We expect you to actively follow academic norms for fairness, accuracy and transparency by clearly indicating when and how you have used AI-generated texts. You must also describe how the AI information is fact-checked. This means that you can't use AI-generated texts as a source basis for factual information. You must critically assess the results you obtain from AI tools to ensure that they are research-based.
  3. If you use AI in an assignment, you must explain how you've used it. You can do this by including the main features of the prompt process with the choice of platform and examples of the questions you have asked. In a bachelor's or master's thesis, you should place this explanation in a separate sub-chapter or section of the thesis, for example in the method chapter.
  4. If you use AI in literature searches, AI can provide fictitious sources. So you should reproduce sources with page references as far as possible. Based on this, we advise against using such tools as the only source for exhaustive literature searches. Instead, we recommend that you use the subscription databases that all students have free access to through the library.
  5. You are responsible for familiarizing yourself with NMBU's regulations on plagiarism. These regulations clearly state that exam answers and assignments must be the student's own work: "If text is copied from other sources, the students get others to write the text for them, or use e.g. Chat GPT or other AI without stating the source, this is considered an attempt on cheating.” The result may be that your exam/assignment/subject is canceled and you become banned from the university.
  6. Because you have the opportunity to use AI in your bachelor's or master's thesis, the oral defense of the thesis becomes more important. It is crucial that you can explain theory, method and process through reflection and by giving examples.
  7. The supervisor for the bachelor's or master's thesis is responsible for thematizing the use of AI. They can give advice on the constructive and critical use of AI and contribute to good academic craftsmanship.

Background:

The guidelines have been designed by the teaching committee at REALTEK together with Ulf Geir Indahl (REALTEK) and Niklas Pettersen Mintorovitch (Learning Centre). They have used similar guidelines at the NMBU School of Economics and Business as a starting point.

The teaching committee approved the guidelines for the use of AI on 29 January 2024.
